The most important interface in a computer system is the instruction set architecture (ISA), as it connects software to hardware. So, given the prevalence of open standards for almost all other important interfaces, why are ISAs still proprietary? The RISC-V project provides a free and open alternative to proprietary ISAs, and is experiencing rapid uptake across the industry and around the globe, with the promise of opening up the hardware world to the same kind of rapid innovation seen with open-source software.
